Resources
Now, as ever, there are many sources of information and teaching available for singers at all levels. However, the availability of teaching videos through sites such as the BBC and YouTube is a relatively new resource, which while not supplanting traditional materials can present the same information in a more immediate and accessible fashion.
There is little new information actually in this website. Most of the content is stored on other websites, and this is an attempt to collect the most useful content in one place, primarily for the benefit of choir members.
Websites
- The BBC Sing: website http://www.bbc.co.uk/sing/learning/
- YouTube http://www.youtube.com/. There are many teaching and information videos here, though not all of them are helpful.
- There is a comprehensive music dictionary provided by Virginia Tech http://www.music.vt.edu/musicdictionary/
- This page gives an introduction to reading musical notation http://datadragon.com/education/reading/
- The Associated Board of the Royal School of Music has a page for choral singing which gives the syllabus for initial, intermediate and advanced levels, and corresponding vocal exercises. http://www.abrsm.org/?page=exams/choralSinging/index.html
Please note that these pages will open in a new browser window.
Books
- One book which I like is How To Sing by Graham Hewitt. It has clear descriptions and lots of exercises.
- The music library on George IV Bridge has a range of books on singing. They probably also have useful videos and DVDs, and almost certainly a pinboard full of adverts for singing teachers.
Singing Teachers
- Edinburgh is a very good place to find a good music teacher. There is probably someone in your section who is having lessons, so ask around. Failing that, ask the conductor, or a committee member, for a recommendation.
